Waylon went from zero CAD experience to becoming a Certified Onshape Professional, quickly turning design skills into real results. He was a driving force behind his team's run to the World Championship and used those same skills to launch an Etsy store that earned Star Seller status.

When Waylon first joined FTC Team Firestorm, he had zero experience with CAD or digital design. The hands-on environment and mentorship pushed him to dive deep into the world of engineering, and the results speak for themselves.

Through Firestorm, Waylon progressed from a total beginner to earning a Professional Certification in Onshape, a credential that validates real competency in parametric CAD modeling. That foundation allowed him to master a wide range of manufacturing technologies, including FDM, SLS, and SLA 3D printing, CNC routing, and laser cutting.

But Waylon did not stop at technical skills. He applied what he learned to the real world by launching his own Etsy store. Using the manufacturing and design principles he picked up on the team, he was able to scale his business and achieve Star Seller status, a distinction Etsy reserves for shops that consistently deliver excellent products, fast shipping, and strong customer service. He established himself as a successful young entrepreneur while still in high school.

The journey from zero CAD knowledge to certified professional to successful entrepreneur happened in a remarkably short time. It is a testament to the kind of accelerated growth that becomes possible when students have access to professional-grade tools, expert mentors, and a team culture that rewards initiative.

“Firestorm taught me that with the right tools and a driven team, you can turn a lack of knowledge into professional-grade expertise,” Waylon said.
