Avid CNC PRO4896 Router
A professional-grade 4×8 foot 3-axis CNC router capable of cutting full sheets of aluminum, plywood, and polycarbonate. Students use it to produce chassis plates and structural components that form the backbone of competition robots.
About the Machine
A CNC router uses a rotating end mill to cut material by mechanically removing chips along a programmed path. Unlike a laser or plasma cutter, it produces real machined surfaces with tight tolerances, the same process used to manufacture production parts in aerospace and automotive industries.
The Avid PRO4896's 4×8 ft bed handles full sheets of standard material (aluminum, plywood, polycarbonate), making it possible to nest multiple robot parts in a single setup and cut them all in one job, efficient and repeatable.

What Students Learn
- CAM programming: generating toolpaths from CAD geometry
- Feeds and speeds: spindle RPM, chip load, and material-specific settings
- Fixturing and workholding: clamps, vacuum, and tabs
- Roughing vs. finishing passes: balancing speed and surface quality
- Aluminum vs. wood strategies: different tooling, lubricant, and approach
- G-code basics: understanding what the machine is doing and why
- Tool selection: end mills, ball end mills, V-bits, and drill bits
- Safe machine operation and job setup verification
Robotics Applications
- → Full robot chassis plates cut from ⅛ in aluminum sheet
- → Custom drive train plates with precise motor and wheel mounting holes
- → Polycarbonate side panels and bumper backing plates
- → Plywood field element prototypes for autonomous practice
- → Nested cuts: efficient material use across a full 4×8 sheet
